Flowering shrubs do more seasonal heavy lifting than almost any other plant category in the garden. They fill the middle layer between groundcover and trees, they bloom for weeks at a time rather than the brief flash of many perennials, and a well-chosen mix can keep color going across multiple seasons rather than just one. This is our largest shrub collection, and it covers roses, camellias, rhododendrons, and a wide range of other flowering varieties.

Roses

Roses remain one of the most popular flowering shrubs for good reason. The Popcorn Drift® Rose and Pink Double Knock Out® Rose are both bred for reliable, continuous blooming with less fuss than traditional rose varieties, making them a strong choice for gardeners who want rose color without the high-maintenance reputation older rose varieties carry.

Camellias

Camellias make up one of the largest groups within this collection, offering layered, often ruffled blooms in a wide range of colors. The Greensboro Red Camellia, Purple Haze Camellia, Autumn Spirit Camellia, Autumn Rocket Camellia, Dream Weaver Camellia, Jack Camellia, LA Peppermint Camellia, R.L. Wheeler Camellia, and Sea Foam Camellia each bring their own bloom color and timing, giving camellia collectors enough variety to stagger bloom seasons across fall, winter, and spring depending on variety.

Rhododendrons & Other Flowering Shrubs

The Roseum Pink Rhododendron and Nova Zembla Rhododendron bring large, dramatic spring blooms and classic rhododendron foliage to the mix. The Jazz Hands Variegated® Loropetalum stands out for its variegated foliage in addition to its blooms, offering color interest even between flowering periods, while the Bellini® Strawberry Crape Myrtle brings the reliable, long-blooming summer color crape myrtles are known for, in a shrub-sized form rather than a tree.

Growing Conditions

This collection spans a wide range of growing zones, reflecting the diversity of plant families included. Roses tend toward the most cold-hardy and adaptable end, with the Popcorn Drift® Rose rated for zones 4 through 11 outdoors — one of the widest ranges in this entire collection. Camellias generally prefer the milder zones 6 through 10, and rhododendrons fall in a similar range at zones 4 through 9.

Sun requirements vary meaningfully by plant family. Roses and the Bellini® Strawberry Crape Myrtle need full sun to bloom their best, while most camellias and rhododendrons tolerate full to part sun, and a few camellia varieties prefer part sun specifically — useful to know since camellias are often planted in the dappled shade under taller trees.

Layering Color Through the Seasons

With this much variety in bloom timing, flowering shrubs offer one of the more effective ways to keep a garden bed interesting across multiple seasons rather than relying on a single big spring display.
