Perennials are the backbone of a garden bed that actually gets better with time. Unlike annuals, which need to be replanted every year, perennials die back and return on their own each growing season, building fuller and more established with every passing year. Shade-Loving Foliage

For shaded or partially shaded spots, the Japanese Painted Fern brings soft, silvery-green fronds that thrive specifically in shade, where many flowering perennials struggle. The Green Patriot Hosta and Francee Hosta both offer the broad, textured foliage hostas are known for, and both tolerate shade as well — a useful pairing with ferns for a layered, low-light garden bed. The Deutschland Astilbe rounds out the shade-tolerant group, bringing feathery flower plumes in addition to attractive foliage, a nice option if you want some bloom color without needing full sun to get it.

Full to Part Sun Varieties

A number of perennials in this collection split the difference, tolerating full to part sun for more placement flexibility. The Balboa Sunset® Heuchera and Marmalade Heuchera both bring colorful, textured foliage that holds interest even outside of bloom season. Bauer's Cordyline offers a bolder, more architectural foliage form, and is also rated for patio growing in addition to its outdoor zone, giving it useful container flexibility. The Foxtail Fern brings a soft, plume-like texture that works well as a filler plant between bolder specimens.

Growing Conditions

Growing zones across this collection vary by plant origin and hardiness. The Goldsturm Black-Eyed Susan and Green Patriot Hosta are rated for some of the coldest zones in the collection, suited to zones 3 through 9, while warmer-climate options like the Foxtail Fern and Mary Ann Lantana are rated for zones 9 through 11 and 7 through 11 respectively. Most other perennials in this collection fall in the middle, generally suited to zones 4 through 9, making them workable across a broad range of temperate climates.
